Brendan Fraser's 10 Greatest Performances
5. Trust
One of Fraser's more recent roles was on the FX anthology series, Trust, which told the story of the kidnapping of John Paul Getty III along with the various exploits the family went through to try and get him back. Directed and headed by Danny Boyle, one of the most interesting things about the show was its meta, fourth wall breaking narrative structure, which frequently took time out to specifically speak to the audience itself both in its form and in its content.
Specifically, Fraser's James Fletcher Chace gets to regularly go from being in the middle of a conversation with another character to simply turning to look directly into the camera and filling the audience in on what is going on. As pointed out in the incredible GQ piece on the actor by Zach Baron, the reason this works so well is Fraser's innate gift for sincerity.
Even as the role sees him playing against type, as a hardened and vaguely cynical man, we are able to believe these moments so whole-heartedly because of Fraser himself. Another important thing to note here is how Fraser's acting style has adapted alongside him, as the years of physical comedy took a toll on his body, he can no longer perform in quite that same way. So instead now, his eyes are the primary conveyer of his character's emotions and godd*mn it, it's incredible to watch.
