5. Ernest Menville - Death Becomes Her (1992)
I've been giving Bruce a lot of credit for playing against type. That's about to change: in Death Becomes Her, it simply doesn't work. Bruce plays Ernest Menville, a meek husband, manipulated back and forth between two women that are - for the most part - just using him as a means to an end. It's a stock character present in countless films involving plots to murder people, and it's a character that often turns out very well. But Bruce Willis - simply put - isn't a meek man and he's clearly not able to play against type to such a degree. The character is muddled and confused, and Willis doesn't seem to be able to get a grip on how he should play it. Ultimately, the end result is just a bit of a mess.
