Bruce Willis: 5 More Awesome Performances And 5 More That Sucked

2. Mikey - Look Who's Talking (1989)

lookwhostalking-still2b_CR Look Who's Talking is an unforgivably unfunny comedy from the '80s in which Kirstie Alley has a child and raises it with John Travolta. Bruce Willis provides the voice of their child's inner-monologue. At no point does the child actually talk within the world of the film. It's the sort of thing that might work if the narration actually contained a degree of wit or could decide on whether Mikey is just a child with a particularly articulate set of thoughts, or as the film often implies, actually has a fully grown adult's intelligence trapped within the body of a baby - even when he's still in the womb. The film makes the mistake of assuming that putting Bruce Willis' voice over footage of a child is inherently funny when it obviously isn't. Because of this, Bruce is left reading a series of statements with an infliction as if they were jokes. And that's when it actually sounds like he can be bothered. Most of the time, Mikey is just flat as if Bruce knew entirely how bad the project was going to be and was just showing up to collect a pay-cheque. Think Harrison Ford's laboured narration forced upon the film by the studio in the theatrical release of Blade Runner and that's essentially what Bruce seemed to be going for.
