Bryan Cranston: 5 Awesome Performances & 5 That Sucked

4. Peter - Seeing Other People (2004)

As has already been established, Cranston was a jobbing actor for a long time before he became a household name with Malcolm In The Middle and Breaking Bad, but it was during the filming of the former that he played a supporting role in this muddled sex comedy about an engaged couple who decide that the answer to eternal happiness in their impending marriage is for them to have a free for all sex romp to get their lust out of their systems. Though it sounds like it, Seeing Other People is not a grown-up American Pie for people who inherently hate each other, though it is as nasty at times as the kind of diseases these people probably picked up while sowing their wild oats across suburban America. It's never quite right that the script sells leading lady Alice (Julianne Nicholson) down the Harlot River, as her fiance (Jay Mohr) resists the need to cheat at first, but everything escalates to such a silly degree that you fail to care pretty quickly anywhere. And therein lies the rub: in a silly, muddled sexy farce, Cranston's Peter is a forgettable footnote - an opportunity for Alice to reinforce her nastiness by sleeping with her brother-in-law, and when you have to keep this many balls juggled up in the air, it's impossible to really care when a famous one appears for a little while, no matter how diverting he usually is. And not even appearing in his underpants yet again can save Cranston from that fate here.
