Cafe Society Review: 6 Ups & 3 Downs

2. It's A Little Too Light For Its Own Good

Cafe Society is light and breezy to the point that it's also difficult to care all that much about what's going on. Allen does nonchalant patter like nobody else in Hollywood, but it does occasionally result in the film feeling a bit lethargic, especially when it comes to the stakes of the central romances.

Some can argue that this is the point, and Allen's lightness of touch certainly works when it comes to the movie's darker elements (as realised by Corey Stoll's outrageously violent mobster), but the film is almost so relaxed and lacking in urgency that it's actually to the love story's detriment.
