Cafe Society Review: 6 Ups & 3 Downs

1. It's Ultimately Mid-Tier Allen At Best

As fun and charming as the film is, it's still basically a mid-tier Woody Allen movie at best, as has been a disappointingly common remark in the filmmaker's late career.

Sure, they can't all be Annie Hall, Manhattan, Midnight in Paris or Blue Jasmine, but as Allen's career will likely begin winding down sooner rather than later, fans are naturally hungry for him to turn out some truly unique, dramatically potent work before that happens.

It's sharply-written, charming, well-acted and gorgeous to behold...like at least half of Allen's back catalogue, so enjoyable though it is, it's certainly not a classic and doesn't really distinguish itself too much in his filmography.
