Cannes 2015: 10 Potentially Incredible Films In Competition

10. Mountains May Depart

Jia Zhangke is no stranger to the Cannes Film Festival - the acclaimed Chinese director, often considered one of the leaders of the "Sixth Generation" of Chinese filmmakers, has already had two features screened in competition at the festival as well as a documentary screened in Un Certain Regard. His latest film, Mountains May Depart, is up for competition this year. Starring Zhao Tao, the narrative takes place in three different times, covering the 1990s, the present day and also a sequence in Australia in the year 2025. Jia said of the film, €œI want to examine how Chinese society is changing, how our emotions change over time and how in the future we may have lost our feelings.€ Not a great deal is known about the details of the film at this point in time, although the episodic structure is similar to that of his other films, particularly A Touch Of Sin, Jia's excellent 2013 film which is still struggling to find a Chinese distributor on account of its unflinching portrayal of corruption. It remains to be seen if Mountains May Depart turns out to be as controversial.
