Cannes 2022: 10 Films We Expect To See
7. Showing Up - Kelly Reichardt
Darling of the global film festival circuit and cinephiles alike, Kelly Reichardt returns this year with a swift follow-up to 2019's First Cow, in the form of Showing Up.
Showing Up will centre around Michelle Williams (in her fourth collaboration with Reichardt), as an artist struggling through life's trials and tribulations on her way to a career-shaping exhibition, which is set to continue Reichardt's tradition of building strong, complex female characters, and will likely play on the old adages of art imitating life and life imitating art.
Though First Cow was not shown at Cannes, it garnered critical acclaim from all quarters and scored a number of prestigious awards in the process, including 2020's Best Picture from the New York Film Critics Circle. Though Reichardt last premiered a film at Cannes back in 2008 (Wendy and Lucy, which was nominated in the Un Certain Regard category), she was a jury member in 2019, and such accolades put her firmly in sight of the festival.
In any case, it would not be a surprise if Showing Up shows up at Cannes 2022, as Reichardt has the filmmaking sensibilities, career experience and sheer heft not just to hit the Croisette, but to potentially walk away with something gold and heavy.
