Cannes 2022: 10 Films We Expect To See
8. Top Gun: Maverick - Joseph Kosinski
A mere 36 years following the release of the film that made Tom Cruise a household name and gold-plated action star, Top Gun's sequel has arrived.
Unfortunately original director Tony Scott passed away in 2012, but the reigns for the unambiguously titled Top Gun: Maverick have been passed to Joseph Kosinski, who last worked with Cruise on 2013's post-apocalyptic actioner Oblivion, and whose steady if unsensational hand is likely to pitch the feature's visuals and pace at the most accessible level for contemporary cinemagoers.
Maverick sees the return of Tom Cruise as fighter pilot Pete 'Maverick' Mitchell, training the next fresh-faced group of Top Gun recruits, hopefully without a greased-up game of volleyball in sight.
Though a big-budget Hollywood action sequel is not necessarily what most cinephiles expect to see at Cannes, Top Gun: Maverick's appearance serves as a salient reminder that not all films that screen at the festival are in competition.
Though production delays, the global pandemic and several studio rescheduling manoeuvres have delayed the picture's release since way back in 2019, it has recently been confirmed that Maverick will premiere at the 75th Edition of the Cannes Film Festival this year, and nothing short of a literal deus ex machina looks set to prevent it.
