Cannes Film Festival: 20 Best Palme D'Or Winners Ever
1. Parasite (2019)
The best Palme d'Or winner by a longshot, though, has to Bong Joon-ho's masterpiece Parasite, a genre-bending rollercoaster of emotions which would go on to sweep the Oscars and increase Western audiences interest in foreign cinema like never before.
Without giving too much away, the deliciously dark comedy-drama concerns the dangerously poor Kim family, who start working for the wealthy Park family in hopes of bettering their lives.
What starts out as a fast-paced dramedy analysing class inequality soon evolves into a wild comedy of errors and an uncompromising thriller which features more twists than it does characters.
The way Joon-ho balances the film's myriad of themes, tone changes and character complexities is nothing short of mesmerising and quite frankly unrivalled, and watching the film gradually slip into all-out madness is a unique sight to behold at every turn.
The Palme d'Or has gone to many great films, but none as compelling as Parasite, a film which is even better in its special black-and-white addition.
