Captain America: Civil War - 10 Biggest Last Minute Concerns
7. It's Too Easy To Parallel It With Batman v Superman
This is not perhaps as much a problem for Marvel as it is for fans who are sick of the supposedly binary existence of DC and Marvel films. The studio and Disney will no doubt love the fact that about 99% of the critical reviews that have emerged so far make some kind of allusion to Batman v Superman.
Unfortunately, the narrative similarities and the whole "Hero versus Hero" thing makes that parallel inevitable, but it's actually limiting both for Marvel and for comic book movie fans generally. If the only standard is set by the studio's direct competitor, and that competitor under-achieves as much as they did with Batman v Superman, the bar for success won't be set very high.
For now, it seems Marvel are competing mostly against themselves, which is better news, but this constant likeness to Batman v Superman is damning with the faintest praise.
And as I've said, the constant comparison makes it impossible for Marvel and DC fanboys to co-exist. There will be further wars (not least when the DC apologists crawl out to slight Civil War and try and equal the playing field) and further antagonism in every comment section that dares to suggest that any DC movie might not be quite up to standard.
I'm sure everyone would just prefer Civil War to be great in its own terms.
