Captain America - Civil War: 10 Characters Martin Freeman Could Be Playing
7. Norman Osborn
Remember that 'playing against type' argument? Repeat that here.
Diabolically sinister business tycoon played by an unassuming small man could be very fascinating. As an actor, it would also allow Freeman to offer up a very different take on a character who’s already had two different iterations on screen. Picture a young and humble Osborn who’s secretly crazy and ruthless, and that sounds like it could be engrossing.
With Spider-Man being introduced, it wouldn’t be all that surprising for some of his universe to show up as well. Even though we can hope for a new villain, the Green Goblin is to Spider-Man as Joker is to Batman, one is unlikely to appear for long before the other shows up. And having just acquired his rights, it seems unlikely that the MCU would waste the opportunity to include such an important character, unless Sony didn’t want them to.
Likewise, Freeman could portray a similar function but with another Spider-Man foe, like Otto Octavius or Curt Connors. Still, Osborn is a much better fit in the Avengers universe, whereas Dr. Octopus or the Lizard might just feel unrelated to everything else going on.
