A lot has been made about whether or not Captain America will be killed as he was in the comics. If the film does indeed follow the source material, then it makes sense that Marvel would quickly look for a successor to his role. Of course, the film may be too preoccupied to set up such foreshadowing, but that’s exactly what these post-credit scenes are for.

Bucky is certainly no stranger to the post-credits stinger. The Winter Soldier featured Bucky checking out an exhibit at the Smithsonian, suggesting that Marvel is willing to centre these pivotal conclusions around his character's evolution.

Bucky picking up Captain America’s shield would be more significant than anything these scenes have done in the past, but it still seems plausible. It would effectively establish his new mantle as well as raise a lot of questions for fans, all the while presenting a clear direction for what’s next. That balance is exactly what these scenes try to achieve and though somewhat predictable, Bucky going for Cap's shield would still be an awesome and exciting moment for fans.
