Captain America Civil War: 11 Critical Reactions You Need To Know
5. The Audience Isn't Told Who To Root For
One of the biggest worries going into Civil War is that, it being a Captain America movie and all, the audience would be compelled to root for him, making the whole moral ambiguity seem, well, not very ambiguous at all.
Thankfully, a ton of critics have assured us this isn't the case at all: "It’s bold of writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely to place their title hero in the most obviously dubious position...Steve’s defence of Bucky is questionable...Who the audience should agree with is hardly a clear-cut matter" (Empire) and "Evans leaves room for doubt about whether Rogers is right to resist outside rules" (The Hollywood Reporter).
Of the inevitable war over ideals, "Captain America and Iron Man...have a final fist fight that actually hurts to watch for one simple reason: they’re both right" (Birth. Movies. Death.), and finally, Variety described it as an "epic clash between two equally noble factions."
Well, isn't that a relief?
