Captain America: Civil War - 26 WTF Moments

10. Why Exactly Do Spider-Man, Ant-Man And Hawkeye Care?

Obviously the film needed both Team Cap and Team Iron Man to expand their numbers for the big set piece, but narratively speaking there's no hint at why any of the three ringers who are brought in would care to sign up to the fight.

Spider-Man could be explained away as enthusiasm, but the fact that he is just brought in to boost numbers (almost despite his powers) seems a little cynical. Stark even tells him to stay away from the action and use his webs from a distance, suggesting that his recruitment is also massively irresponsible on Iron Man's part.

Meanwhile, Hawkeye is brought in to rescue Scarlet Witch, despite the fact that he's literally the worst possible option to fight Vision, and Ant-Man comes in because he answered the phone, or something. It's not like he's even recruited to use his VERY specific powers, which is just dumb.

Even without thinking too hard, the Russos could have used Ant-Man - who has a track record with heists and breaking into the Avengers compound already, remember - to help break Wanda out alongside Hawkeye (whose personal link to the Maximoffs could have helped draw Wanda's suppot). Instead, the Russos just sort of forgot to write in a real reason and hid behind Paul Rudd's delightful comedy instead.
