Captain America: Civil War - 8 Plot Twists No One Will See Coming
5. Martin Freeman Is Actually Playing The Red Skull
When it was revealed that Martin Freeman had landed a key role in Captain America: Civil War, the excitement to see the fan-favourite Hobbit and Sherlock star in the Marvel Cinematic Universe was obviously very high. While Marvel has yet to officially announce who he's playing, reliable sources point to it being Everett Ross, a very minor comic book character who was a government agent assigned to Wakanda (the home country of Black Panther). If true, that's pretty disappointing, but what if the British actor is actually playing the Red Skull? One of the most memorable moments for that villain from the comics books was when a US Senator called Dell Rusk - yes, it's an anagram - revealed that he was actually the Red Skull in disguise, and that was a story which also funnily enough involved Black Panther. We still don't know what happened to the Red Skull when he vanished at the end of Captain America: The First Avenger, so regardless of whether Freeman's character is him somehow reborn, a loyal follower who has taken over the mantle, or is possessed by the villain as a character in The Winter Solider comic book was, this has the potential to really shock fans. After all, just imagine for a moment that Ross is portrayed as a friendly, bumbling, and affable character throughout, only for it to then be revealed that he's actually Captain America's greatest villain in disguise! This could play out in Civil War or even set up a fourth instalment of the franchise, and it would be a hell of a lot of fun getting to see Freeman show off his evil side for a change...
