5. The Bucky Aspect Of The Plot Is Worrying
One of the most interesting reveals contained within the new trailer concerns one Bucky Barnes, Captain America's former best friend turned brainwashed assassin. It was always thought that Bucky would be important to the plot of Civil War, of course, and that he'd ultimately "turn good" and take the Captain's side during his conflict with Iron Man. But nobody could have guessed just how important the Winter Soldier would be to the overall plot of Captain America: Civil War. In fact, it's revealed in the trailer that it's pretty much due to Bucky that Cap is forced to turn his back on his former allies: he doesn't feel that Bucky should be held responsible for his actions during the time he was brainwashed - all those murders included. That Captain America would defend Bucky to this degree seems a little unrealistic, given the circumstances. Surely Rogers would find a better way to deal with everything? Still, having Bucky as the "catalyst," as it were, feels a little underwhelming - and somewhat misguided - as a narrative hook. He isn't considered to be a particularly popular character within the canon thus far, after all, and audiences are likely to side with Iron Man in the face of Captain America choosing to defend a murderer. But this is a Captain America movie, right? Shouldn't our sympathies technically lie with the guy whose movie it is? Here's hoping that Marvel have a better reason for having Captain America decide to fight a bunch of superheroes and ruin his reputation other than: "Duh, they're old pals!" As it stands, there's nowhere near enough proper narrative weight to back up his actions.
