Captain America: Civil War Ending - 12 Big Implications For Phase 3
7. Is A Black Widow Movie Now Possible?
The last we saw of Natasha in Civil War she was clashing with Iron Man over her decision to interfere with Black Panther and allow Bucky and Cap to escape to Siberia. She flees with the promise that General Ross and his over-zealous hero hunters are on her case, and while she has potential allies underground, she might be drawn to her own mysterious past after the events of The Winter Soldier.
The Ideal approach would be to have Black Widow follow the threads back to The Red Room, building on the slightest hint in Civil War that she already knew Bucky (I don't really buy that she'd be hurt at him not recognising her after The Winter Soldier, given that they barely meet) and tying them into a continuation of The Winter Soldier story.
Obviously, there would be some grumbles at Widow not being allowed her own solo project, but having Bucky and perhaps Hawkeye and Nick Fury involved as support would work. And that wouldn't mean she had to surrender top billing at all. Plus it gives those three something to do, while we unpick more of the other most interesting origin story in the MCU.
