It's become somewhat of a tradition that a Captain America film has to have a bit of light foreshadowing to the fact that, eventually, Bucky Barnes will take over the star-spangled mantle; it happened in the comics and with Sebastian Stan only three movies in to a nine film contract, it's really only a matter of when, rather than if. The First Avenger had Bucky pick up the shield shortly before his "death" and in The Winter Soldier he held it in a pretty iconic moment just before his identity was revealed. In Civil War, however, we'll go a bit further; he's actually using it properly. At the end of the trailer, during the Cap and Bucky's fight with Iron Man, the pair toss the shield back and forth, using it as a shared weapon against Shellhead. Many have assumed that Civil War will end with Steve Rogers death, leading Barnes to take up the Captain America mantle. While various factors (contracts, marketability, the presence of Chris Evans in Avengers: Infinity War) make that unlikely, it's clear Marvel aren't shying away from setting up an eventual passing of the torch.
