The film generally restrains itself from being yet another prequel film which over-explains the origins of iconic lore, but it was definitely a neat surprise to learn the inspiration for the superhero supergroup name The Avengers (and on a broader level, Fury's Avengers Initiative).

In one of the film's final scenes, Fury is leafing through some redacted documents about Carol, when he notices that the callsign on the side of her jet refers to her as Carol "Avenger" Danvers. This prompts Fury, who is busy drafting a global security document called "The Protector Initiative", to re-title it as its more iconic namesake.

Captain America (Chris Evans) may still technically be The First Avenger, but Carol's part in making The Avengers what they are is unmistakable.
