In the comics, Carol's costume was clearly designed simply to evoke the same design principles of Mar-Vell's suit, with a the colour palette being a slightly brighter version of the original and the same Hala star logo featuring on the chests of both outfits.

Now, this may seem like a rather miniscule change, but its implications are quite the opposite. You see, in the books the choice of colour really is inconsequential, though, in the movie, it signifies a major turning point for Carol.

Choosing the same colours as that of the United States air force shirt that Monica was wearing signifies how Danvers' has finally accepted who she is and that Yon-Rogg and the rest of Star Force aren't the best of people, with the keeping of her Kree uniform also symbolising that she is a citizen of two worlds even with the deceit she received from her supposed allies on Hala.
