2. Captain Marvel Is A Skrull

The Rumour: Alright, laugh it up. This theory caught a surprising amount of traction online, that the movie's biggest twist would be the reveal that Carol Danvers is neither Kree nor human: she's in fact a Skrull.

The theory posits that, with the messy nature of Carol's memories, they could've all been implanted by the Skrulls for some sort of nefarious reason. This would line up with Carol's knowing claim in the trailer, "I'm not what you think I am."

The Truth: It's an interesting idea that riffs on notions of identity and good and evil, but this would've just been too extreme a change of the character's mythology to be accepted by the hardcore crowd.

Granted, Marvel Studios has gotten away with some pretty radical rug-pulls in the past - the Mandarin twist, anyone? - but re-configuring the precise nature of the MCU's most powerful character is a whole different kettle of fish to reinventing a villain we'll probably never see again.

As it turns out, Carol is a human granted powers by the Tesseract and brainwashed into believing she's a Kree courtesy of Yon-Rogg. That's it.
