Annette Bening played a somewhat unconventional role in Captain Marvel, portraying both the Supreme Intelligence and Doctor Wendy Lawson, but she was no less vital a part of the film.

The second big twist of Captain Marvel is that the figure from Carol's past is actually Mar-Vell, who took on the false identity of Lawson in order to develop her research for lightspeed travel. In the comics, Mar-Vell is actually a man, and his pseudonym is a Dr. Walter Lawson. Both versions of the character end up playing a part in Carol's transformation, but it's fair to say no one saw Bening's surprise reveal as Mar-Vell coming.
