8. How Did Lawson Even Get The Tesseract?

It's fair to accept that films cannot show absolutely everything on screen, but it still feels like a plothole for us not to find out how it is that Dr Lawson comes to be in possession of the Tesseract.

It's easy to assume that she infiltrates SHIELD (though this does inspire the question of what happened to the real Lawson) and gets herself into Project Pegasus to work on the Tesseract research led by Howard Stark previously, but beyond that, there are some big questions. Given that HYDRA are already within SHIELD and how important the Tesseract clearly was, why on Earth would they allow anyone to simply walk off with their prized possession.

To even remotely answer how that's possible, you have to speculate based on nothing shown in the film (or in other material), which is not at all ideal. And without an answer, it looks like SHIELD (and indeed HYDRA) just missed the fact that Lawson took the Tesseract from under their noses.

Also, if Lawson is a Kree, how come she looks human? Surely it's only Skrull who can shapeshit to blend in? It's not like any of the other Kree looked like "normal" people?
