18. What Happened To The SHIELD Boss?

Much like we'll probably never find out what happened to the real Graves from Fantastic Beasts who Johnny Depp's Grindelwald copies and steals the identity of, there's a fairly big gap in the backstory of Ben Mendelsohn's Talos.

When he comes to Earth, he steals the identity of Ben Mendelsohn's SHIELD boss and thus looks an awful lot like Ben Mendelsohn. But what happened to the real Ben Mendelsohn of SHIELD? At no point is it revealed that he's killed off or imprisoned and it seems a big hole, not least because killing him would make Talos pretty evil but also because managing to get that close to disappearing a SHIELD boss is a big, big deal.

Also, as a side issue, why do the Skrulls all have different accents relating to areas of Earth? Why wouldn't they all sound at least slightly similar?
