Captain Marvel: Everything We Know So Far

8. The 90s Setting

For the first time since Captain America: The First Avenger, the MCU is going to a different time period. Rather than being set roughly in the present day among the rest of the movies, Captain Marvel is going to take place in the 1990s.

It's an interesting change for the MCU, but one that opens up a number of possibilities. It's certainly a decade they can have a lot of fun with, in regards to references, music, fashion and so on, although exactly why it's set so far in the past is something that Feige wouldn't reveal, telling MTV:

"Uh, well, there is an unexplored period of the Marvel Cinematic Universe that we wanted to showcase, and... almost anything else is a spoiler..."

Of course, part of the reason is so that they could have the tease at the end of Infinity War and the character's arrival in the present day in Avengers 4, but quite how all of that ties back into the 90s remains to be seen.
