The Kree-Skrull War, which ran from 1971-72 across Avengers #89-97, remains one of Marvel's most acclaimed and influential comic book storylines, and is regularly hailed as a high-point of the Silver Age. And with Captain Marvel, it's getting the big screen treatment.

The story finds the Avengers, including Scarlet Witch and Vision, caught in the middle of a long-standing intergalactic warfare between two alien races, the Kree and the Skrulls, the latter of which use their shape-shifting abilities to sow unease and paranoia on Earth. Importantly, it's the arrival of the original Captain Marvel - Mar-vell - on Earth that puts the events of the story in motion.

It's impossible for Captain Marvel to directly adapt the storyline, since it's a solo movie and won't feature the Avengers, but the likelihood is that we'll see some key parts of the war, with both Mar-vell and the Carol Danvers version of Captain Marvel fighting against the Skrulls (who have been described as the main villains) on the side of the Kree, with the government side of things - and their crackdown on aliens - probably how Nicky Fury and S.H.I.E.L.D. fit into things. This then establishes the Skrulls in the MCU, ahead of a potential Secret Invasion-esque storyline in Phase 4, whereby at least one hero could be revealed to have been a Skrull all along.
