A solid effort...but far from great.

With just days to go until Captain Marvel finally hits screens worldwide, reviews have finally dropped for the Marvel Cinematic Universe's first ever female-led superhero tentpole.

Unsurprisingly, the early consensus is that Captain Marvel is a fun time that mostly does justice to its title character, even if it's ultimately on the lower end of the MCU's offerings to date.

With a Tomatometer score of around 90% and an average score fluctuating close to the 7/10 mark - a fairly unremarkable score for the standards of the MCU - it's clear that Captain Marvel isn't going to be a progressive event film on quite the level of, say, Wonder Woman or Black Panther.

However, it delivers a reliably entertaining superhero origin story all the same, while (presumably) setting the table for Avengers: Endgame. Thankfully, though, most critics have kept their mouths shut about discussing the film's inevitable tie-in to the upcoming superhero epic.

So, it might be worth lowering your expectations a smidge before going to see Captain Marvel, but for the most part it seems to deliver another fun, escapist Marvel thrill-ride...
