Captain Marvel Reviews: 10 Early Reactions You Need To See

10. Brie Larson Elevates The Uneven Script

"Larson manages to capture a fiery but playful sense of humor in her character that deftly avoids the tropes associated with naive, superpowered outsiders making "first contact" with humans. Make no mistake, Carol's superpowers have nothing to do with empathy or warmth – her strength is completely derived from a perfect Molotov cocktail of spite and stubbornness, which is an absolute joy to watch unfold. Carol Danvers is as unapologetically brash and bold as a hero could be, even when it gets her into trouble, and it's oh so satisfying." - IGN
"Brie Larson is a perfect fit for Carol, who begins the film as Vers, a Kree soldier being trained by Yon-Rogg (Jude Law) to control her emotions to become a better fighter...Larson’s quite capable of selling that oscillation of maturity without losing the humor of her character; she may be confident, but she’s still crafty and calculatingly playful. And what really sells this film is that playfulness." - The Wrap
"The film hinges on a fierce performance from Brie Larson, though I think it could have showcased her in a stronger, clearer starring role and assigned her more of the script’s funny lines." - The Guardian

Reviews both negative and positive seem to generally agree that even when the script falters, Brie Larson gives a captivating performance as Carol Danvers.

Some critics did note that her portrayal left them a tad cold, though this seemed to generally be a criticism of the writing rather than her work.

Larson was of course a fantastic pick to play Captain Marvel on paper, and though this isn't the surging, five-star vehicle for her that MCU fans were hoping for, she still largely delivers the goods as expected.
