Captain Marvel Trailer: 5 Things We Want To See
What should Marvel's first lady show?
Marvel fans have been itching for a female-led hero movie for years, ever since Black Widow debuted in Iron Man 2. Since then the Marvel Cinematic Universe has grown exponentially and studio executives have realised that a woman leading her own comic book movie can be incredibly successful (thanks Wonder Woman!). Enter; Carol Danvers, A.K.A Captain Marvel.
Entertainment Weekly recently released a preview of the 1990s set film. It showed off Captain Marvel's stellar red, blue and gold suit, the villains of the movie (the pesky Skrulls) and some of the supporting cast. It also included a de-aged Samuel L. Jackson returning as Nick Fury, with both eyes still intact and his iconic eye patch is nowhere to be seen.
And although Marvel usually deliver a rip-roaring adventure, they do make the occasional misstep; we're looking at you, Thor: The Dark World. Since Brie Larson is the first actress to headline her own movie in the MCU we're a little nervous about Captain Marvel. It's not to do with her acting abilities - more about Marvel doing the character justice.
There are certain things that trailer needs to show off in order to get us really excited and we've narrowed them down to five things...
5. The Skrulls
Since Captain Marvel is set in the nineties, it makes us wonder where she's been in the time since then. The villains of this movie likely give us that answer, she's been off fighting the devious shape-shifting alien race known as the Skrulls. We've already seen what they'll look like, as the EW preview showed us Talos, played by Ben Mendelsohn.
The Skrulls are green, pointy-eared aliens that can change their appearance - and they're also well known for their role in 'The Kree-Skrull War' from the comics, which will be adapted in Captain Marvel. Since they're an alien race we haven't met just yet, the trailer really needs to establish them as a threat big enough to warrant a photon-powered hero to beat the snot out of them.
That could be done by showing their dastardly infiltrating skills, like when they pretended to be most of Earth's mightiest heroes during the fantastic Secret Invasion comics event. Or by showing off the mightily intimidating scale of the Skrull Empire. In the comics, Talos isn't able to shape shift, but he does have super-strength to make up for that, so chances are he and Captain Marvel will go head-to-head at some point.
