Captain Marvel Trailer Review: 9 Ups & 2 Downs

6. The Clever New Origin

When it was revealed that Marvel were making Captain Marvel and that we'd be getting to see how she gets her powers, some fans would have immediately been drawn to the problem presented by that awful Green Lantern film that Ryan Reynolds wishes had been struck from the record.

Unfortunately, that film starts with an origin story that is almost identical to the most famous Captain Marvel origin and nobody wants that sort of parallel being drawn. So instead, it appears we're getting something else: it appears we're going to meet Captain Marvel fully formed, arriving to 1990s Earth and then finding herself reminded of a human origin that she might have been initially unaware of.

It's a little like her host - Carol Danvers - was body-snatched and then her return to Earth (on the trail of the Skrulls who land there) awakens those feelings. Essentially, the film appears to be doing something different in their approach here, with Marvel actually investigating her own origin and finding out the origin of Carol Danvers rather than the other way round. It's a cool distinction and difference is definitely a hugely marketable commodity for this release.
