Captain Marvel Trailer Review: 9 Ups & 2 Downs
5. There's No Infinity War Coat-Tail Riding
How easy would it have been for Marvel to use the huge selling power of Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers 4 to market Captain Marvel? After all, that post-credits scene with the intergalactic pager was one of the lasting images of that movie (alongside all of that unfortunate death) and raised some pretty big questions about Captain Marvel's involvement in Avengers 4 as the saviour.
But it's great to see that Marvel haven't gone with that approach, which would have been pretty reductive, in all honesty. It would have suggested that they didn't have enough faith in the character to market her as her own thing and that would have been terrible for perceptions of the film.
The only real allusion to that film is the loaded shot of Nick Fury's Motorola pager, which would later be augmented to communicate with Captain Marvel in the Infinity War stinger. And that's JUST enough of a reminder that she's going to be a big part of Avengers 4 without anyone's toes being trodden on unnecessarily.
