Chadwick Boseman: Every Movie Ranked Worst To Best

5. Captain America: Civil War (2016)

Captain America: Civil War signalled Black Panther's MCU debut. Like the last two Avengers pictures, Boseman is a supporting player here in Iron Man and Captain America's growing animosity, but outside of Tony, Steve and Bucky, he's easily the film's biggest highlight.

In his debut, Boseman is much more uncaged and emotional than he would become in later films. Following the death of his father (John Kani), T'Challa goes on a quest for revenge and attempts to kill Bucky (Sebastian Stan), who has been framed for the crime. His thirst for vengeance allows Boseman to really lean into Black Panther's complexities and physical strength.

Civil War is a startling achievement in choreography and emotional character development, and though he's barely around compared to other characters in the film, Boseman makes Black Panther feel as developed and real as the various MCU veterans that surround him.

After this, Boseman was well and truly in the big leagues, and fans were already hooked on Black Panther fever.
