Chadwick Boseman: Every Movie Ranked Worst To Best
3. 42 (2013)
42 was the film that put Chadwick Boseman on the map. Without it, who knows where his career would have ended up. Like many of his earlier films, this sports drama is a somewhat predictable tale, but is boosted to greatness by its heart and Boseman's sublime leading turn as Jackie Robinson, the first African-American athlete to play in modern Major League Baseball.
Boseman plays Jackie Robinson as a man very close to his own heart. In the film, Robinson is forced to overcome prejudice and adversity, and his passion for baseball is so powerful it keeps him fighting through his obstacles no matter what. Boseman makes all of that believable, and in the film's best moments his performance hits like a ton of bricks.
When the film was released, Robinson's widow Rachel Robinson stated: "I love the movie. It's authentic and it's also very powerful." The biopic was criticised for its brief inaccuracies, but surely this is the only response to the movie that counts?
42 is a remarkable film, and without Boseman it wouldn't have been half as masterful.
