Chick Flicks: 10 Feminist Friendly Blockbuster Movies

7. Thor

4 copy copy In the Marvel universe, even better than The Avengers is Thor. Thor comes out ahead because of the fact that it has twice the number of female characters, leading to more diversity and equality. Thor also passes the Bechdel test, which The Avengers does not. Thor has four awesome female characters. We have Frigga played by the brilliant Rene Russo, Darcy, who acts as the comic relief in the movie, a role rarely available for women, Sif, a female warrior who doesn€™t look like she stepped out of a porno and Jane, a love interest done right. A big critique I have about a lot of movies is female armor. Having armored boobs is not a necessity or even useful. Sif€™s amor was useful, instead of revealing and useless like women€™s armor often ends up being. Other than Thor himself, Sif was the strongest warrior in the entire movie and the leader of her small band; Lady Sif and the Warriors Three. One of the best scenes with Sif is when Thor speaks to her, looking for support and asks who proved everyone wrong that as a woman, she could not be one of the fiercest warriors. Sif replies €œI did.€ She doesn€™t need Thor at all. Sif makes it on her own. Jane, played by Natalie Portman, proves that a love interest doesn€™t have to be useless. Her relationship to Thor was almost a footnote in her character development. Jane was a cool scientist who didn€™t lose all her awesome with the appearance of an attractive Norse god. Jane led a team, did actually useful science and had almost as much screen time as Thor. As well as this, she had character development not relating to her relationship with Thor. We learned about her past, her father and her work. She was a fully developed, useful character who is not rendered useless by the sudden appearance of Chris Hemsworth€™s abs.
