Child's Play Review: 6 Ups & 3 Downs

Not bad at all.

Child S Play
United Artists

The dubiously-anticipated remake of classic 1988 horror flick Child's Play is in cinemas now, and despite a totally hype-devoid marketing campaign - aside from some awesome Toy Story-mocking posters - the critical response has been relatively decent, or basically on par with the original, at least.

Though this new, tech-centric take on the killer doll franchise isn't a blistering re-tooling for the ages, it at least demonstrates an understanding of what made the original work, and introduces some intriguing new wrinkles which pay off against the odds.

Is it a must-see horror flick on a week where you can watch the genuinely great Toy Story 4 instead? Absolutely not, but if you're in the market for some enjoyable schlock that's well-acted and doesn't take itself remotely seriously, you could do far, far worse than this.

In a summer jam-packed with crushing disappointments, this totally unassuming remake few were actually asking for turned out better than most surely expected...
