Child's Play Review: 6 Ups & 3 Downs

2. Too. Many. Jump Scares.

Child S Play
United Artists

If you're looking for a horror movie that's actually, you know, scary, the new Child's Play probably isn't for you.

Despite some effectively creepy visuals, director Lars Klevberg too often relies on tired jump scares, as proves especially obnoxious in the film's first half.

Klevberg certainly knows the type of kitschy genre throwback he's making, but it's a shame he delivers the same dull jumps the genre has been dining out on for literally decades, without any subversion whatsoever.

Thankfully the third act ditches the jump scares entirely and lets loose with an orgy of ultra-violence, but the journey getting there sometimes clings a little too eagerly to over-familiar genre formula.
