Child's Play Review: 6 Ups & 3 Downs

3. The Solid Ensemble Cast

Child S Play Aubrey Plaza
United Artists

In addition to Mark Hamill knocking it out of the park, the performances for the film's human characters are also above and beyond what you were likely expecting.

Aubrey Plaza is an unconventional yet appealing fit for Andy's mother Karen, bringing her requisite sarcasm to the table, and while she doesn't get too much to do once the third act mayhem kicks off, she still makes Karen more than just a generic placeholder parental figure.

Andy himself is meanwhile solidly acted by Gabriel Bateman, and Beatrice Kitsos makes a firm impression in her screen debut as his kick-ass friend Falyn.

The film's easy scene-stealer, however, is the brilliant Brian Tyree Henry, who plays a detective living next door to Andy. He's by far the movie's most likeable character and brings a ton of charm to the table.
