Chris Evans: 5 Awesome Performances & 5 That Sucked
2. Curtis Everett - Snowpiercer (2013)
In Snowpiercer, Korean filmmaker Bong Joon-ho's daftly underrated adaptation of a French graphic novel, Chris Evans offers up his most angst-ridden performance.
As one of a handful of survivors who live on board a never-stopping train in the wake of the freezing apocalypse, Evans plays Curtis Everett, a man confined to the slums of the tail end. Resourceful, stoic and forever battling the demons of a shocking past, Curtis ultimately comes to lead a rebellion as he battles his way to the front of the train to meet the architect of the titular "Snowpiercer."
Bong Joon-ho originally disliked the idea of casting Evans, deeming him too all-American for the part. The two met, however, and the director saw that there was more to Evans than Steve Rogers; he's the relentless, violent force that keeps the narrative driving forwards, but there's also sad, wary side to the character - a sense of pain and remorse that Evans manages to brilliantly convey using just his eyes.
Hopefully this is one of the three films that Evans is actually proud of, because it's exactly the kind of weird and original film that he should continue to make.
