Chris Evans: 5 Awesome Performances & 5 That Sucked
1. Steve Rogers - Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2013)
Nobody expected Captain America: The Winter Soldier to be quite as brilliant as it was; though the first flick was entertaining enough, it didn't leave much of a lasting impression, whilst Evans - as the titular superhero - didn't feel quite as fitting in the role of Steve Rogers as, say, Robert Downey Jr. did with Tony Stark.
His performance as the Captain picked up slightly in The Avengers, of course, and he managed to make an impression with a few in-jokes and a couple of badass action moments, despite not being the film's main focus. When The Winter Soldier landed, though, so did Chris Evans - here was an actor finally commanding a role that had managed to elude him somewhat previously.
It was almost as if Evans, accepting of his fate as the lead in a major superhero franchise, stop lamenting and decided to just give it his all; here Captain America became an interesting character in his own right, partly down to the clever scripting (which pegged him as a "man out of time"), but mostly due to the way that Evans effortlessly switched between moments of po-faced seriousness, comic self-awareness, awkward romance and genuine anguish.
With The Winter Soldier, Captain America finally felt like a "person" - and that's down to Evans' decision to commit entirely to the character. He's never been better.
