5. The Five-Year Engagement
Most famous for his starring role in TV's How I Met Your Mother, Jason Segal has also carved quite a career for himself by writing, producing, and starring in his own comedy films as well. Not bad even without the fact that The Muppets brought not just an ailing franchise, also but some of the 20th Century's best loved characters, to the attention of a whole new generation. In 2012's The Five-Year Engagement Pratt enjoys the supporting but central role of Alex, right there from the beginning when he helps Segal's Tom with his initial proposal. At the engagement party he's at his side once more, singing a "loving" ballad about all of Tom's ex-lovers as only a best friend could. He's also there to protect him from flirting with their new colleague when he notices Tom sending "telepathic wiener missiles at her face." Although it's a role that starts off as goofy as his others, his impregnating and marrying his best friend's fiancé's sister soon brings out his maturity. Throughout the film he not only offers sage advice, but even becomes responsible to the point of firing his best friend in order to make sure he fulfils his potential. Alex brings out the flare for immaturity that Pratt is best known for, and allows him to flex various acting muscles all within the same character. In The Five-Year Engagement Chris Pratt proves he can be funny and serious at the same time, and even sing when the role requires it.
