€and 5 That Sucked

5. The Portrait of a Lady (1996)

Bale€™s Character: Edward Rosier If you thought this painfully long adaption of the classic Henry James novel was a lot to sit through, imagine being in it. A universal flop both financially and critically, Bale€™s character curries the affections of the protagonist in a hefty sub-plot that just doesn€™t have the meat to justify the huge devotion of screen time. I guess we can€™t blame Bale for this directly, but nevertheless the time that he€™s on-screen is painfully dull €“ but then so is the time he€™s not, I suppose. He was still learning and earning way back in 1996 though; learning the craft that€™s gone on to elevate him to immortality (a pursuit that true genius will never cease from) and earning his place amongst Hollywood€™s elite by cutting his teeth on boring, god awful guff like this.
