Clint Eastwood: 5 Awesome Movies And 5 That Sucked

3. The Rookie

Eastwood fails both as a director and star in this vapid buddy cop action movie, from 1990. Playing (yet again) a grizzly, grumpy police detective, Eastwood this time teams up with a young hotshot cop (Charlie Sheen) to help put a German crime boss (horribly miscast Raul Julia) behind bars. This was yet again another style over substance entry from Clint during the late 80's. This film once again hits the well of action movie cliches and comes up empty every time, attempting to make a splash with over the top car chases and pyrotechnics, and whomever thought that Raul Julia, a South-American born actor could be a convincing German is still certainly saying their Hail Marys for that one. Thankfully this was one of the last films of this ilk (both as actor and director) that Clint Eastwood has made in his otherwise distinguished career, as he began to venture into much more deeper and profound material.
