4. Intermission (2003)
Intermission represents for me Colin Farrells return to his roots after his success in Minority Report had started to sour with his roles in Daredevil and ugh S.W.A.T. Again, Farrell isnt the primary focus here; Intermission is an interwoven ensemble piece set in Farrell's home city of Dublin, that follows its separate characters through their various existences. Farrell plays Lehiff, the no-good thug whose petty theft in the movies opening scene sets off an unpredictable chain of events. Again, Farrell completely holds his own against great actors like Colm Meaney and Cillian Murphy and its perhaps a testament to his ability that this might have been the first time you actually realised that Farrell was Irish. His opening scene in Intermission proves that hes not just a Hollywood babyface. He manages to turn from an intensely dashing Irish poet type, as he lulls his mark and us too - into a false sense of security before BANG! He viciously assaults her and demands money. In a split second he turns from rugged, sensitive type to menacing sociopath. Not an easy switch to flick by any means and for that his Intermission performance gets a mention this side of the list.
