10. The Cockatoo Jump Scare - Citizen Kane
Citizen Kane has endured for the better part of an entire century as one of the greatest films of all time, and while a virtually unimpeachable film from scene to scene, there is one moment that pisses off even a lot of people who love the movie otherwise.
Yes, it's that damn, dirty cockatoo jump scare.
As Charles Foster Kane's (Orson Welles) butler Raymond (Paul Stewart) speaks late in the film, the transition to a flashback is foretold by a cockatoo which suddenly screeches totally out of nowhere.
On one hand it's completely out of step with the rest of the movie with its sheer loud abrasiveness, but on the other it's a hilarious and memorable quirk that, according to director-star Orson Welles himself, was intended to wake up audiences who might be getting sleepy at this point.
That's a lesson for budding filmmakers - if you're ever worried viewers might be getting bored, just toss a jump scare in there totally outta nowhere. Can't fail, apparently.
