20 Most Divisive Movie Scenes Ever

17. The Video Game Scene - The Beach

Danny Boyle's The Beach is one of the filmmaker's most polarising movies, so it's fitting that it might well contain the single most divisive scene he's ever filmed.

At the end of act two, as protagonist Richard (Leonardo DiCaprio) is chased through the jungle by Thai farmers, the scene suddenly shifts into a retro video game-esque aesthetic, complete with a heads-up display containing a score, lives, map, and so on, all while Richard tries to steer clear of horrible-looking digital animals.

In online discussions about the film it's just a matter of time before this scene is brought up as an example of a director taking a big swing and whiffing it, the visuals and Leonardo DiCaprio's very extra facial expressions making it all unintentionally hilarious, as though crafted by someone who's never played a game in their life.

But it does have its defenders, who feel that the scene is a very Danny Boyle way of showing Richard's frayed mental state. Either way, everybody has a strong opinion about it.
