20 Most Divisive Movie Scenes Ever
16. Brand's Love Speech - Interstellar
Interstellar proved itself to be one of Christopher Nolan's more controversial films upon release, though sentiment has skewed more outwardly positive over the past decade, even if there's still contention over Dr. Amelia Brand's (Anne Hathaway) love monologue.
During the expedition to save humanity, Brand passionately argues to Coop (Matthew McConaughey) that love is "the one thing that we're capable of perceiving that transcends dimensions of time and space."
It's a scene that split fans immediately, especially those who flocked to Nolan's film expecting a purely hard-sci-fi experience, which they felt this more flowery, sentimental perspective clashed with.
But the opposing argument is that we're not necessarily supposed to agree with Brand's viewpoint - which, again, is only her viewpoint.
Coop immediately treats her opinion with skepticism, and to take it further, one can argue it's also not meant to be taken totally literally, that Brand's perspective on love is more philosophical, referencing how love is at the fundament of so much human endeavour.
Expect this scene to be fiercely debated until the heat death of the universe, though.
