20 Movies Critics HATE But Audiences LOVE
19. Bad Boys II
Michael Bay's original Bad Boys didn't get much love from critics, but they flat-out hated the 2003 sequel, which sits at a brutal 23%.
For many reviewers, it was an unbearable showcase for all of Bay's worst excesses as a filmmaker - a nihilistic, style-over-substance buddy cop film that just didn't know when to end.
But regular viewers largely had a good-to-great time with it, per its 78% audience score.
There's something to be said for a visually stunning, pedal-to-the-metal action flick that serves up a ton of bonkers action, doesn't take itself too seriously, and benefits from the fiery chemistry between Will Smith and Martin Lawrence.
And in recent years there's been something of a movement in cinephile circles to reclaim the film as a standout example of "vulgar auteurism" - an audacious work of intentional bad-taste cinema that can't be dismissed quite so easily, even if it has gags about rat sex and naked corpses.
