20 Movies Critics HATE But Audiences LOVE
18. The Butterfly Effect
Time travel thriller The Butterfly Effect took a kicking from critics back in 2004, who largely found it melodramatic, unconvincing, and bogged down by a miscast Ashton Kutcher in the lead role.
But far from the mere 34% critical rating, audiences gave it a far more favourable 81%, and more to the point, The Butterfly Effect is still consistently discussed online more than 20 years after its release (do you feel old yet?).
Its unexpected take on time travel, even accepting the presence of one glaring plot hole, combined with Ashton Kutcher's solid dramatic performance - critical snark be-damned - made this one of the more memorable sci-fi offerings of the entire 2000s.
And hell, even some critics changed their minds about it - in 2009, The Guardian's Peter Bradshaw admitted that he was overly harsh on the film because it was trendy to hate Kutcher at the time of its release.
