Cruella Review: 5 Ups & 5 Downs

1. It's The Most Unique Live-Action Disney "Remake"

Beyond its visuals, Cruella is by far the most unique of Disney's recent glut of live-action remake - or in this case, remake-adjacent - projects.

Though obviously indebted heavily to its inspiration, this doesn't seem quite so desperate to just rake over the same style and narrative touchstones.

Its spiky feminist themes prove far more persuasive than the factory-assembled just-play-the-hits nature of Beauty and the Beast, Dumbo, Aladdin, and The Lion King.

It's certainly not the best of the bunch - that crown goes effortlessly to Jon Favreau's The Jungle Book remake - but it at least has the bravery to forge a bold path for itself that isn't resting entirely on what came before, flaws be-damned.
